Thursday
Today was another of those days of contrast – unrelated experiences with fascinating things. Our friends Judy and Dave took us first to the Pacific Coast Air Museum . A museum of primarily warplanes of the 20th century. We were treated to an introduction and tour by the Education Director and allowed to enter 2 of the aircraft – a Huey Helicopter and an Albatross Search and Rescue Seaplane.
In my younger days I took flying lessons and actually made a solo flight from Madison , CT to Essex , CT. My career as a pilot ended abruptly when the owner of the airport showed me the wreckage of a recently crashed plane and explained in detail how it had happened. That did it! I never piloted a plane after that.
My interest in airplanes, however, continues today and I was thrilled to sit in the cockpit of the Albatross with my hands on the controls and my feet on the rudder pedals dreaming of flying alone over the endless ocean – just me and the plane!
Back to reality!!
Leaving the museum we drove north into wine country toward Armstrong Woods State Park to hike among the Redwoods. We had finally escaped the golden hills ventured into the forest along the Russian River .
We stopped at the Korbel Winery for lunch – no champange – and moved to the redwoods. (While at Korbel we saw a telephone of the type completely foreign to the younger generation – see image below.)
The redwoods were awesome. No matter how many times I walk among these giants I am struck with the wonder of such trees. At least one was but a sapling when America was unknown spanning 1300 years!
I’ll let the images tell the story.
We visited a few towns in the area – Occidental and Mendicito – and returned home. It was treat to ride through the countryside with no responsibilty for the driving. The weather today was cool, sunny, and cloudless! Ideal!
