Yellowstone – Second Day

The first thing we did after surviving a cold evening and colder night with intermittent snow and rain was to go to West Yellowstone for breakfast and to use the Chamber of Commerce’s free wireless internet from their parking lot.

After our jaunt to town, we set off the finish the trip from our campground to Old Faithful and on to the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake. We had started it yesterday after our arrival but had run out of daylight.

We visited many multicolored thermal pools and heeded all the warnings not to step off the boardwalks lest we be swallowed by the steaming landscape.

We walked through a landscape dotted with steaming pools of hot water, rich blues, yellows, oranges, and browns, and intermittent geysers. The backdrop for these walks was a range of snow-covered mountains.

Old faithful performed on schedule for the assembled throng. After the show, we ate our lunch out the Yellowstone Inn and then continued on to Yellowstone Lake.  On way, we crossed the Continental Divide twice.

We reached the lake on a highway flanked with the residue of winter’s bounty – plenty of it.  The lake was mostly frozen and bordered by more thermal pools, which seemed somewhat anticlimactic. The real treat was the horizon beyond the lake - the snow capped Rockies in all their glory. It was the best show on earth. The image I include below does not begin reflect their glory.

Tomorrow we drive to Grand Tetons National Park to meet from friends from Madison.
